Overview

Term: 3 Years

 

The incumbent will directly support student-led early-stage, science-based startups operating out of the Science Innovation Hub for Velocity. The Senior Manager, Velocity Science has 5 primary sets of responsibility: (1) work closely with student teams in the Science Innovation Hub helping them with research support and connections to internal and external resources; (2) establish and maintain an inclusive, curious and entrepreneurial culture in the lab; (3) create and maintain a network of relationships on campus with different faculty and labs that may help student teams; (4) provide early-stage entrepreneurship support for students seeking to commercialize their ideas in collaboration with other Velocity team members; and (5) communicate effectively with the Velocity Laboratory Technician to maintain a safe and active lab that is resourced appropriately for resident teams. The Senior Manager will also provide some in-lab support to iGEM teams operating out of the Science Innovation Hub.

 

The successful candidate will create an active and engaging environment where students feel empowered to build out their ideas in a safe and inclusive lab space. The Science Innovation Hub should house more than a lab but a community where students meet other founders, are inspired to start business and learn how to do proper research and early product development. The Senior Manager must take an active interest in all student projects and help guide them to resources and support on campus and beyond that they would not otherwise find.

Responsibilities

Provide supervision and coaching

  • Assign space and resources to teams within the Science Innovation Hub
  • Teach students who lack knowledge of academic journals and databases how to use these resources for their projects
  • Challenge teams to think critically about their projects and future plans
  • Conduct weekly roundtable meetings with all teams to discuss business and technical bottlenecks and help alleviate them
  • Help teams technically de-risk their ideas through R&D
  • Help teams think about the customer experience while tackling product development
  • Provide laboratory support to iGEM teams operating at the Science Innovation Hub

Network with faculty, staff and alumni who may assist teams

  • Establish connections with multiple professors, departments and institutes on campus where students may gain the necessary knowledge support for their projects
  • Arrange for uWaterloo alumni and Velocity founders to meet with student teams and network

Communications

  • Identify promising entrepreneurial students and work with Velocity team members to help them navigate Velocity campus programming
  • Champion advanced student teams for entry into the incubator upon graduation
  • Connect student teams with Velocity Cornerstone, deeptech and health tech advisors for support
  • Work with Velocity marketing members to help promote the space to students

Culture (social and safety)

  • Ensure the Science Innovation Hub maintains a welcoming inclusive culture where students of any experience or program are welcome, after receiving the necessary safety training
  • Maintain safety culture, set processes, and ensure all safety measures are employed properly in coordination with the Laboratory Technician
  • Meet with and encourage students interested in joining the space

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in STEM field required; PhD preferred
  • 4+ years laboratory research experience preferably in a leadership role
  • Entrepreneurship experience in translation of a laboratory technology to a commercial product an asset
  • Experience working with students and student teams
  • Extensive experience networking with university professors and staff
  • High degree of organizational skill, interpersonal acumen, and problem solving ability required to provide oversight in balancing the multiple priorities, partners, facilities, and programs
  • High degree of creativity, strategic thinking, entrepreneurial ability, and adaptability
  • Tact and diplomacy as well as the ability to engender trust as a credible and professional representative of the university
  • Highly developed talent assessment and identification abilities
  • In-depth understanding of the role that entrepreneurship and innovation programs play in the nurturing and launch of sustainable, deeptech companies
  • Understanding of the principles and application of key areas of business, especially as they apply to startups, including but not limited to product development, marketing, sales, intellectual property, operations management, financing, and talent development and management
  • High level knowledge and expertise in the strategy and process of technological innovation with a focus on scientific research and development
