The Quantum Technology Lab Coordinator is accountable the TQT Principal Investigator and TQT Program Director and runs the day to day operations of the Quantum explorations space in RAC1. This teaching and outreach space is used for the laboratory component of Quantum Technology MS, for IQC outreach and TQT training.  The TQT Principal Investigator organizes the laboratory component of the MS program and the TQT Program Director coordinates the training and outreach activities of TQT (the Transformative Quantum Technologies CFREF program).

 

The Quantum Technology Lab Coordinator enables the effective teaching of the three laboratory classes in the Quantum Technology MS program, and prepares demonstrations for outreach programs. These activities share space in the Quantum Explorations space.

 

The position involves setting up experiments, testing and, documenting them and helping users explore them.

 

This role is contingent on funding.

Responsibilities

Team Engagement

  • Maintains the Quantum Explorations space as an effective place to explore quantum technologies and to teach

  • Builds, documents and maintains experimental setups

  • Works with TAs and staff to upgrade experiments

  • Works with faculty, TAs and staff to prepare documentation, including lab manuals

  • Ensures TAs get appropriate training, guidance and instructional materials

  • Engages directly with students to make their experience using the Quantum Explorations labs a positive one

Teaching and Outreach

  • Participates in planning and implementation to improve the delivery of undergraduate lab courses and learning experience

  • Makes improvements to experiments and develops new experiments for lab courses

  • Enhance the student experience of the lab component

  • Ensures development of lab manuals and teaching material aids for TAs and lab demonstrators

Lab Operations

  • Coordinates the operation of the Quantum Explorations space, particularly the sharing of the space for both teaching and outreach activities, including collaborate with the IQC Outreach Manager

  • Collaborates with faculty and lab instructors to ensure that materials and skill development are properly coordinated

  • Maintains and repair lab equipment

  • Ensures teaching assistant training and instructional materials remain current as the curriculum evolves

  • Teaches and demonstrates lab sections as required

  • Demonstrates outreach material as required

Qualifications

  • PhD in Physics or related discipline, or a MSc degree with three or more years’ experience in experimental physics
  • At least 3 years’ experience working with physics experiments

  • Experience with at least one of, spin dynamics, quantum optics, and superconducting electronics.

  • Desire to become proficient in any of the above areas where experience is lacking

  • Experience as a teaching assistant or tutor of undergraduates

  • Experience with either MatLab or Mathematica for physics simulation and modeling

  • Ability to develop instructional materials

  • Advanced knowledge of experimental physics at the undergraduate level

  • Aptitude for teaching and an interest in working with undergraduate students

  • Skilled with repair and maintenance of physics lab equipment

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and management skills

  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple complex, different tasks simultaneously
