Overview

Term: 3 years

 

This full-time position is accountable for the leadership of the women’s basketball program as it’s Head Coach. The position reports to the Associate Director, Athletics, and will support and act in accordance with the strategic direction and initiatives of the Warriors Athletics program and the University of Waterloo as they relate to student-athlete development, revenue generation, general promotions, budget management and appropriate administrative responsibilities as the Head Coach of the women’s basketball program. The Head Coach will ensure compliance with the OUA and USPORTS rules and regulations.

 

These responsibilities are required in organizing a competitive and successful team while promoting academic success for student-athletes.

Responsibilities

Student-Athlete and Team Performance

  • Provide student-athletes with high quality sport experiences in an environment that pursues excellence in athletics and academics
    • Develop a philosophy and framework for operation of the basketball program
  • Leading student-athletes, assistant coaches and high-performance support staff towards successful competitive performance
  • Provide an inclusive and holistic environment for student-athlete development
    • Pursuit of excellence in academics, athletics and personal development
    • Compliance of the department’s student-athlete behavioral expectations
  • Create a strategic multi-year program plan that includes assessment and evaluation of staff, student-athlete and team performance
    • Yearly planning instrument outlining all elements of the student-athlete physical, emotional, competitive and academic success plan
    • Staff expectations, mentorship and assessment plan
  • Successful implementation of programs and services that support basketball student-athletes including academic support, scholarship protocols, eligibility, doping controls and other league competition requirements

 

Athlete Recruitment

  • Recruitment of student-athletes that will be successful both academically and athletically
  • Create and administrate a multi-year athlete recruitment program
    • Highly developed recruiting network identifying and communicating with targeted student-athletes
    • Establish and communicate your recruiting philosophy and priorities with staff, scouts and recruiting network
  • Knowledge of university, OUA and USPORTS admission and eligibility processes

 

Leadership Development for Student-Athletes and Coaches

  • Supervision and mentorship of assistant coaches
    • Recruit, retain and define expectations for the coaching staff to implement a program framework and philosophy
  • Role model for student-athletes and UWaterloo students
  • Leadership and instruction in the academic, athletic, and personal development of the studentathlete
    • Advising team members in academic, disciplinary and personal matters, when appropriate
  • Create a strategic multi-year leadership program plan that includes assessment and evaluation of basketball staff and student-athletes

 

Financial Management

  • Strategic and sustainable plan for financial management of the basketball program
    • Athletic Financial Awards (AFAs) and fundraising strategy
    • In collaboration with the department and university community define and deliver a revenue generating program to meet financial objectives. Including but not exclusive
      • Camps, clinics, departmental initiatives
      • Alumni relations and development of annual and multi-year solicitation and stewardship strategies
  • Development, monitoring, and accountability for an annual budget

 

Relationship Management

  • Lead and direct program relationships with both the internal and external community
    • Department, UWaterloo community, advancement, Alumni, media, sponsors and the local community
  • Build strategic relationships with basketball groups in the local and broader community to foster relationships, build networks, increase visibility, increase awareness, and that act as a resource to enhance community engagement and build loyalty
  • Contribute and support yearly marketing and communications promotional plans

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate university degree or equivalent combination of education and head coaching experience required
  • Five years of coaching experience, preferably at the university level
  • Managing finances with multi-layers (base budget, fundraising, donations, etc)
  • Effective communication skills and proven organization
  • Leadership and management skills are required
  • Vulnerable sector check is required
  • First aid certification is required
  • Appropriate NCCP coaching certification is preferred
  • Excellent written, interpersonal and oral communication skills required
  • Demonstrated knowledge and implementation of student athlete recruitment strategies
  • Demonstrated success with technical and tactical in game decisions
  • Sport specific coach training and experience with post-secondary student-athletes
  • Travel for competition, meetings, recruiting and community appearances is required
  • Work related demands may exceed 40 hours/week
