    The Senior Development Officer (SDO) is responsible for the full scope of development activities related to the discovery, cultivation, solicitation, recognition, and stewardship of a portfolio of prospects and donors to the Faculty of Science and collaboratively with the greater University of Waterloo community. Under the direction of the Director of Advancement, and as part of a Faculty advancement team, the SDO works closely with the Dean, Associate Director - Advancement, Faculty leadership and volunteers to identify and qualify prospects and to strategically engage, cultivate and solicit financial support for Faculty priorities which align with donor interests.


    The incumbent develops strategies to promote ongoing and/or increased giving; this includes personally soliciting gifts, sponsorship and funding independently, and in concert with University Executives, volunteers, faculty and staff, appropriate to donor interests and university policy. The S/DO will actively use planned giving, donor relations and stewardship, annual and leadership giving, and information based systems to advance the Faculty and science, in the context of a highly collaborative Advancement team.


    Portfolio Management

    • Conduct 100-120 face-to-face visits per year with the goal of delivering 10-12 solicitation proposals two monthly proposals and closing eight major gifts and two planned gifts per year
    • Develops effective cultivation and solicitation strategies for prospects
    • Maintains a portfolio of 80 major gift prospects assessed as having the ability, or potential, to make gifts over $100,000, including pledged gifts over finite campaign periods
    • Initiate contacts with potential donors; develops appropriate engagement strategies including working with senior university administration (President, Provost, VP’s), Faculty of Science leadership (Dean, Associate Dean’s, Chairs and Directors), central office of Advancement leaders (AVP’s and Directors) and volunteers to maximize their opportunities to support the Faculty through philanthropic giving; make solicitations when appropriate; and maintains stewardship contacts with donors


    Prospect Management

    • Ensures detailed notes are recorded for the prospect tracking and clearance systems, and prepare regular progress reporting on fundraising targets through standardized reporting tools and systems
    • Completing follow-up correspondence, briefings and updates to prospects, donors and internal stakeholders
    • Post activities and outcomes to central filing systems, shared directories, and the Donor Database (RE)


    Major Gift Fundraising

    • Provide input into the Faculty’s priority activities and projects
    • Develop and execute immediate and long-range plans for comprehensive programs to realize the full potential from individuals for various levels and types of gifts and commitments, including planned gifts
    • Participate in prospect identification, review, research, management and clearance for the Faculty and identify opportunities to leverage and partner with colleagues, in the Schools of Optometry and Pharmacy, as well as other intra-institutional programs and partners’ priorities
    • Initiate, lead, direct and manage programs designed to obtain maximum financial support from a wide range of potential individual donors. Directs proactive research on individuals identified as having significant donor potential
    • Direct prospects and donors to other Faculties, University projects and central functional areas of Leadership, Annual and Planned Giving as appropriate to their inclination and capacity
    • Create and direct the development of cultivation and solicitation plans and gift proposals for specific projects, including written proposals, gift agreements, oral presentations, volunteer management and ultimately steward gifts received through donor recognition activities.
    • Organize and train volunteers to assist and promote the Faculty in all aspects of the advancement program including major gifts, alumni relations, co-op activities, government relations and communications
    • Promote the Faculty and university through public presentations and personal contact
    • Through the Director of Advancement, identify work priorities and objectives for professional staff linked in the Advancement team (Advancement Assistant, Alumni Advancement Officer). Support School based Advancement as directed by the Director of Advancement
    • Actively participate in professional development opportunities to maximize performance and career progression potential. Mentor university and departmental colleagues in their career progression


    Communication and Coordination

    • Ensure purposeful team communication and coordination with key participants including colleagues
    • Actively strengthen the uWaterloo and Faculty of Science brand through the active integration of, and adherence to messaging, strategies and processes
    • Proactively and consistently communicates with the Dean, Associate Deans, School Directors and Associate Directors of Advancement, Departmental Chairs, and central offices
    • Participate in activities to develop and share new ideas that will result in better work practices and collective, team based success to achieve increased fundraising results


    • University degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience, as well as appropriate fundraising experience
    • 3- 5 years Fundraising experience with extensive experience in securing major gifts
    • A track record of successful donor engagement and gift solicitation, including the ability to effectively marry donor philanthropic goals with Faculty priorities and activities
    • Superb communication and interpersonal, skills including the expertise to create promotional materials and complex proposals
    • A demonstrated ability to develop and implement advancement strategies for major gift development with a strong ability to successfully solicit, secure and close major gifts, in a decentralized environment
    • A solid understanding of the university environment including the integration of research and indepth understanding of Science is an asset
    • Excellence in computing skills; and knowledge of and proficiency with Constituent Management Software (i.e. Raiser’s Edge) or similar applications, Website content management and HTML experience
    • CFRE designation, or progress toward achieving CFRE designation is an asset
    • Availability to travel; some travel within Canada and possible travel to International locations may be requested
    • Regular working hours, some evening/weekend work required, particularly in event based and travel based development
