    An opening for a laboratory technician is available in the Metal Isotope Geochemistry laboratory, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Waterloo. The laboratory is a new stateof-the-art facility that includes a metal-free clean room, two mass spectrometers, and a laser ablation system. The laboratory technician is required to assist with preparation of geological samples in the clean
    laboratory and with analyses using a Nu Plasma II inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, an Agilent 8800 inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer and an Analyte G2 laser ablation system.

     

    This role is contingent on funding.

    Responsibilities

    Operation and maintenance

    • Analyzes samples on the Nu Plasma II, Agilent 8800 and Analyte G2 instruments
    • Carries out routine maintenance on the Nu Plasma II, Agilent 8800 and Analyte G2 instruments
    • Performs sample dissolution and ion-exchange chromatography in the clean laboratory
    • Monitors the clean laboratory to ensure background contamination is minimal
    • Ensures a continuous supply of clean labware for sample preparation and analysis

    Client services

    • Assists undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty and visiting researchers with lab usage
    • Evaluates data quality and prepares data reports for internal and external clients
    • Answers questions by clients regarding analytical methods, data reduction, and data quality
    • Provides laboratory tours as part of outreach activities

    Administrative support

    • Organizes data files and maintains accurate records of instrument usage
    • Orders laboratory supplies as necessary
    • Assists with financial record-keeping
    • Updates MSDS database, laboratory inventory, and standard operating protocols

    Qualifications

    • M.Sc. degree in Earth Science or Environmental Science is required or equivalent education and/or experience
    • Demonstrated experience with wet chemistry techniques
    • Demonstrated experience in a leadership capacity
    • Previous experience with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry is preferred
    • Previous experience with laser ablation systems is preferred
    • Good knowledge of geology and geochemistry
    • Working knowledge of analytical chemistry
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
    • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Powerpoint
    • Previous experience with MATLAB is an asset
    • This position is expected to be on call for emergency troubleshooting and maintenance after hours
