  • Overview

    The incumbent in this role is responsible for providing day to day support of both storage and servers which includes a focus on our large virtual and a multi-petabyte storage environment. The incumbent will participate in a progressive range of activities encompassing the design, installation, and maintenance of these environments.

    Responsibilities

    • Linux system administration
    • Proactively monitor for potential issues and make recommendations for remediation
    • Contribute to the planning and design of the storage and virtualization environments
    • Perform hardware and software diagnostic testing
    • Configure, test, and maintain hardware and software
    • Diagnose reported problems and complete repairs appropriately
    • Install upgrades to system components
    • Occasional work outside regular business hours
    • Participate in an on-call rotation for problem-response support outside of UW business hours may also be required

    Qualifications

    • University degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • 3 or more years’ experience in designing, installing, and troubleshooting a large virtual environment
    • 3 or more years’ experience in designing, installing, and troubleshooting a large storage environment
    • 5 or more years’ experience working as a Linux systems administrator
    • 1 or more years’ experience administering a VMware Vsphere or Microsoft hyperV environment
    • Must possess excellent interpersonal, customer service, communication (oral and written), problem solving, analytical, and time management skills
    • Outstanding deductive and investigative skills with the ability to identify and diagnose complex, non-intuitive technical problems as well as demonstrated ability to interact with a wide variety of clients under stressful conditions is an asset
    • Must be able to document and follow procedures
    • Must have excellent customer service skills
    • Must be willing to undergo a Government of Canada Security Screening and be able to obtain a Reliability Status to access Protected B data, see: http://iss-ssi.pwgsc-tpsgc.gc.ca/msi-ism/ch2-prt1-eng.html
    • Ability to work independently or as a team
    • Ability to learn and execute new skills
    • Must have a valid G driver’s license
    • Must be able to lift and carry (up-to 50lbs), work at a desk, and on a ladder
