    The Information Systems and Technology (IST) department at the University of Waterloo provides information systems, technology and services in support of teaching, learning, research and administrative needs across campus. Within IST, the Integration and Information Management group provides data integration services to the campus, archiving, warehousing, and reporting on university data in order to meet key university strategic priorities.


    IST is seeking an Information Systems Specialist (BI Developer) to fill a software development role, combined with application and database support tasks to a variety of integration and information management systems and projects. These complex systems support key business processes that span the university and impact students, staff, and faculty, and primary reside in a Microsoft technology stack. As such, an advanced level understanding and experience as a Windows Administrator is required. The successful applicant will work closely with other IST teams and campus partners to support the data integrations for information systems across campus to meet the needs of the university. Key competencies for this role include advanced systems administration, relationship management, customer service, creative problem solving, organization & planning, communication, and teamwork.


    The Information Systems Specialist (BI Developer) is directly involved in the life cycles of multiple systems, and is involved with other projects and working groups within IST. The responsibilities of this role encompass a wide range of areas that currently include:

    • Managing multiple varied application technology stacks at various stages of their lifecycles
    • Change management and documentation
    • Tier 3 support of production systems, including advanced troubleshooting of production issues


    • University degree required; or equivalent education and extensive experience
    • Extensive experience with Microsoft based systems administration is required
    • Significant experience in the development of scalable web-based applications using Microsoft technologies, C# .NET/.NET Core, and Microsoft SQL Server or similar relational database
    • Experience with front-end development using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and experience with a dynamic client-side framework like Angular, Vue or similar is preferred
    • Experience with using source control tools for shared code development, preferably Team Foundation Server or GitHub
    • DevOps or similar experience in application monitoring, performance tuning, and deployment. Ability to perform basic Windows and Linux server management tasks
    • Relational database query development and TSQL experience is strongly preferred
    • Proven ability to leverage strong leadership competencies in support of providing excellent client service
    • Excellent problem solving abilities along with demonstrated experience in project leadership, project management, and customer service
    • Advanced level experience creating, configuring, and managing Windows Server, User group management, IIS administration, MSSQL databases and web applications. Further proficiency with command line scripting with Windows Powershell is required, as is advanced knowledge of querying and SSRS reporting from MS SQL databases
    • Must have excellent interpersonal, customer service, communication, organizational, research and analytical skills with proven ability to interact with co-workers, clients, and third party vendors with tact and diplomacy
    • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and clients is key
    • Must work as part of a team within a busy and dynamic environment, with experience managing multiple tasks at once
    • Proven track record of taking initiative and delivering consistent outstanding results on projects and other work assignments
    • Occasional work outside regular business hours
