    Term: 18 months


    The Marketing and Recruitment Officer is responsible for the development and implementation of marketing strategies and tactics to support graduate enrolment management. The Officer develops and implements researchbased integrated marketing and communications plans to align with graduate enrolment management goals, including online, print, and media strategies. Adopting and applying industry best practices and emerging technologies for innovative graduate student marketing and recruitment tactics, the Marketing and Recruitment Officer plays a major role in shaping graduate marketing initiatives that effectively build on the University’s global brand reputation.


    This role is contingent on funding. 



    • Ensures that University of Waterloo’s branding and visual identity frameworks, messaging, and style guides are adhered to in all graduaten marketing and recruitment efforts
    • Encourages adherence to brand guidelines among campus partners (e.g. faculty, staff and students) by providing direction and expert counsel on best practices for graduate studies
    • Develops and implements integrated marketing plans to maximize university-wide graduate marketing tactics
      Works with campus stakeholders to optimize and leverage marketing opportunities to highlight graduate studies at the University of Waterloo

    Communications and relationship management

    • Develops and writes marketing and recruitment communications, including but not limited to online, print and social media content, applying the UWaterloo positioning framework
    • Creates alignment and cohesion for communication and marketing strategies; ensures marketing and communication protocols are streamlined and optimized
    • Works closely with Marketing and Strategic Initiatives and communications colleagues across campus to develop robust communications plans, leveraging assets across multiple channels
      Establishes and fosters collaborative campus-wide relationships, including Faculty recruitment representatives, as they relate to supporting graduate enrolment management, including building consensus and coordinating alignment of recruitment activities
    • Works closely with the campus partners responsible for on- and off-campus recruitment initiatives (e.g. open house, recruitment fairs) to ensure that marketing and communications initiatives align where possible
    • Supports the engagement of prospects through the student life cycle, as defined by the graduate enrolment management mode


    • Researches and identifies the most effective marketing channels to reach prospective students, including social media engagement and advertising
    • Maintains an understanding of the characteristics and motivations of prospective graduate students, including their needs/expectations during the enrolment stages
    • Maintains awareness of evolving post-graduation career options, particularly in non-academic fields, in order to leverage examples for recruitment and marketing purposes
    • Manages data collection to inform the graduate enrollment management initiatives and to inform the development and evaluation of the marketing and recruitment plans
    • Conducts quantitative and qualitative surveys, such as but not limited to, questionnaires, interviews, focus
    • groups, secondary data analysis
      Presents research to campus stakeholders, as required

    Design and digital assets management

    • Works collaboratively with internal and external creative partners on marketing projects, ensuring all projects adhere to the University’s visual brand guidelines
    • Engages in the creation of digital content materials including videos, photographs, email templates, web and email banners, infographics, social media assets, etc.
    • Investigates and assesses new communications opportunities to utilize in marketing and recruitment initiatives
    • Maintains a thorough understanding and appreciation for the current media landscape that uses new media sources and technology to support best-in-class work

    Project management and budget

    • Creates and updates an annual tactics/process documents that details marketing/communications activities, and co-ordinates those activities with other graduate marketing and recruitment initiatives
    • Develops, writes, and follows Marketing Action Plans that accurately document all components of a marketing
    • Creates work back schedules and other relevant project management tactics to deploy communication and marketing campaigns (e.g. social media, web)
    • Determines and applies appropriate key metrics for measuring the success of recruitment initiatives
    • Tracks and keeps current all marketing and recruitment budget activities; ensures timely budget allocations/processing on matters supporting marketing and recruitment initiatives (e.g. marketing campaigns)


    • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent education and work experience in a marketing/communications field
    • 4+ years of experience in marketing and communications
    • Communications professional with proven ability to create of digital platforms
    • Previous experience with collecting, conducting and analyzing research data analyzing data
    • Proven experience with accuracy and attention to detail
    • Previous work experience in a post-secondary institution preferred
    • Successful experience meeting multiple and concurrent deadlines and managing small and large-scale projects
    • Experience using social media to enhance and support marketing and communications strategies
    • Experience building and maintaining a strategic social media engagement plan and daily execution
    • Experience using Apple hardware and software, Adobe Creative Cloud, Drupal CMS, Google Analytics, and other digital tools such as Hootsuite
    • Excellent written and oral communications skills, with a solid knowledge of both English grammar and the specialized requirements associated with communicating with varying audiences, including prospective students
    • Ability to apply creativity and recommend strategies for engagement initiatives in response to cultural and social trends
    • Strong organizational skills coupled with the ability to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and excel in a fast-paced environment characterized by changing priorities
    • Demonstrated ability to thrive in and contribute to an integrated and collaborative team environment and to apply a positive team approach to working with colleagues
    • Ability to integrate digital and traditional marketing and communications programs to support graduate recruitment and enrolment goals
    • Demonstrated graphic and digital design skills for both online and print
    • Demonstrated skills with DSLR photography and video, including use of editing tools
    • Occasional travel may be required; occasional evening/weekend work required
    • Some overtime work required (events)
