As Manager, Programs, the candidate’s main priority is to develop and execute a cohesive program strategy for Velocity. Entrepreneurship is a foundational pillar of the University, of which Velocity plays a key role. Velocity has two mandates: 1) University of Waterloo community mandate (students, faculty and staff) and 2) a mandate to support startups out of the Velocity Garage startup incubator.

 

This role is based at the Velocity Garage and focuses on programming for our startups and founders. At a strategic level, the Manager, Programs ensures effective programming for our companies and founders is in place. The incumbent needs to have a high level of understanding of the founder needs in order to create relevant programming. Furthermore, the Manager, Programs will display outstanding planning and execution of these programs in large part through the execution of events that include workshops, dinners, training sessions, socials, pitch competitions and other special events. Furthermore, the incumbent will identify and implement successful outreach strategies and collaborations with external partners in the form of events and networking sessions that would bring value to Velocity companies.

 

This role is contingent on funding. 

 

Responsibilities

Overall Strategy and Cohesive Approach (30%)

  • Develop cohesive programs strategy for the Velocity Garage
  • Constantly evolve this strategy as needs and priorities change
  • Ensure there is seamless integration across the various Garage initiatives
  • Develop a strategy to secure speakers, judges, and mentors including high-profile entrepreneurs, investors, and key stakeholders

Programs (30%)

  • Manage the coordination of logistics for all Velocity Garage events: Big Dinners, Treat Days, Exit celebrations, and any other new events undertaken to engage the community
  • Coordinate special events with external partners
  • Liaise with internal and external event partners
  • Create programs to help build a sense of community among founders at the Garage
  • Engaging visitors to the Garage who are interested in learning more about Velocity
  • Management of co-op student

Startup Outreach (20%)

  • Researches successful and innovative programs and event ideas from established organizations around the world and determines fit and need for similar programs and events at Velocity
  • Develops relationships with other incubators/accelerators, post secondary institutions and other relevant organizations to find opportunities to organize new and/or joint events
  • Attends events and represents Velocity in startup fairs/events as required

Special Projects/Relationship Management (20%)

  • Provide leadership for special projects involving companies, alumni and stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain excellent relationships with internal and external partners

 

Qualifications

  • University degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ideally experienced in program management, event management, project management, or a related discipline
  • Presentation skills, negotiating, communications, relationship building, gaining consensus
  • A vehicle and valid driver’s license is required for this role
  • Work from multiple locations in a collaborative co-working environment
