The Laboratory Demonstrator will provide support for the operation and instruction of Kinesiology Undergraduate Laboratory experiences. The Laboratory Demonstrator, along with Teaching Assistants and under the direction of the Senior Demonstrators, course instructors and Administrative Officer, will provide in-class instruction and guidance for students in our hands-on learning experiences. This position will assist with administrative details, coordination of logistics and other duties as required to support the successful delivery of the department’s laboratory program. The Laboratory Demonstrator will serve as a resource to ensure that the lab content being delivered is consistent with current understanding and technology. The incumbent will be a part of the Kinesiology Department teaching team and thus will be required to operate within a team environment, providing proactive support to others and upholding the department’s standards for professionalism and lab experience value.

Responsibilities

Teaching delivery for assigned laboratories (including but not limited to):

  • Under the supervision and direction of the Senior Demonstrator and/or Administrative Officer, provide teaching and mentoring expertise for Kinesiology Undergraduate lab experiences as assigned
  • Apply key learning objectives within a laboratory setting, optimizing current technology and emerging industry standards to create a valuable learning experience for participants
  • Participate in the delivery of lab protocols and associated documents for hands on experiential learning activities
  • Administer the laboratory assessment documents and grading criteria
  • Ensure academic integrity is maintained in laboratories
  • Be an active member of the teaching team for all assigned lab experiences
  • Participate in the coaching and mentorship of Graduate students acting as Teaching Assistants in the lab experiences

Managing assigned laboratory facilities (including but not limited to):

  • Uphold relevant technical and equipment safety requirements, enforcing the correct operation and
  • maintenance of the department’s equipment and safe operation of the laboratories
  • Participate in the set-up of physical laboratory layouts and maintenance of laboratory facilities
  • Participate in equipment booking and maintenance

Additional support for Kinesiology Department activities (including but not limited to):

  • Provide other administrative and instructional support to Undergraduate program activities as required
  • Actively participate in other activities that enhance and complement the academic program such as lab practice sessions, volunteer activities and special projects and events
  • Participate in Kinesiology Outreach Programs as required
  • Facilitate equipment training and application advice for undergraduate and graduate students and faculty

Qualifications

  • University Graduate Degree, preferred in Kinesiology or equivalent education and experience in Kinesiology
  • Teaching experience in post-secondary academic setting an asset
  • Excellent communication, teaching and on-line/electronic communication skills (e-mail, on-line learning applications and other social media)
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of competence in Kinesiology assessment and evaluation tools and techniques. Examples include exercise physiology, neuromechanics, exercise assessment and prescription
  • Excellent organizational skills will be required to prioritize multiple duties and requests and facilitate record keeping
  • Excellent knowledge of UW undergraduate and graduate programs in Kinesiology is an asset
  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Desire to Learn (D2L) skills – intermediate proficiency
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to present as a friendly, professional advocate for the department and its activities and to foster good working relationships with a variety of clients including students, staff and faculty
  • Valid First Aid certification is required
