Reporting to the Director of Design and Construction – Plant Operations, the Facilities Technologist/Designer will be responsible for collaboratively determining and meeting University client requirements for cost effective design proposals and solutions for the University campus, facilities and infrastructure, contributing towards providing a safe and accessible, invitingly clean and comfortable, functionally-enriched and well-maintained campus environment through service excellence.

Responsibilities

Strategic Planning

  • Assists with and supports the department’s internal initiatives to develop design and construction standards, standard specifications, quality assurance and quality control protocols

Operations, Design and Project Coordination

  • The successful candidate will become an accountable member of a multi-disciplinary team of Facilities Technologists and Designers, responsible for determining and meeting client requirements for space renewal and design providing cost effective solutions that are functional, consistent with campus design standards and compliant with applicable codes and standards
  • Prepare concept sketches and preliminary estimates to assist the client in validation of project and budget control
  • Prepare in a timely manner architectural drawings, specifications and all necessary documentation for bid and construction
  • Prepare and maintain detailed client approvals and project charters during all phases of design and construction
  • Follow internal procedures and policies for management of designated substances during design and construction
  • Follow internal procedures and policies for procuring suppliers, consultants and contractors
  • Select and specify products from catalogues, technical literature and experience for suitability, availability and cost
  • Coordinate with Plant Operations Maintenance Department to ensure designs are consistent with maintenance preferences
  • At the completion of a Work Request, update relevant CAD master drawings before the file is closed
  • Prepare bid and contract documentation for fixtures, furnishings and equipment supply and installation to suit building renovations and new construction
  • Prepare site instructions, contemplated change notices, change orders and review shop drawings during construction phase
  • Perform as Owners representative when periodically meeting Contractors during bid period, or when resolving problems and performing general review of installations during construction
  • Maintain proficiency in the use of current version of Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software used in the department
  • Input time in the electronic time reporting system on a daily basis and keep time sheets up to date

  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned and supports departmental activities

Qualifications

  • Completion of a program in architecture, architectural technology, construction technology or engineering technology with courses in AutoCad and the Ontario Building Code
  • One year of post graduate experience in building consultant office
  • Ability to produce quality deliverables and to monitor project tasks
  • Strong analytic, oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a deep commitment to customer service, proven innovative approach to problem solving and an aptitude towards service excellence and responsiveness
  • Must be flexible and adaptable to changing requirements, and responsive to client needs
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) designation may be considered an asset
