Reporting to a Section Supervisor, the Building Serviceperson Carpenter I is assigned to the general repair, maintenance, renovation and alteration of University buildings, furnishings and structures, the provision of trade and job instruction and work direction to other classifications, and other duties as assigned.


There are 2 positions available.


The Carpenter I may make decisions concerning the preventive maintenance required and the replacement of parts or materials as necessary to maintain buildings and furnishings in a good state of repair. The Carpenter I communicates reports, advises and receives instruction from supervisory staff concerning costs, manpower requirements and priority of work and breakdown maintenance. Performs facility condition inspections and writes summary reports. May be required to source and requisition materials for renovation and renewal projects. Coordinates the work of employees assigned to assist in tasks.


The Carpenter I may perform all the duties of Serviceperson II Carpenter on a routine basis, including:

  • Hanging and maintenance of doors; ceiling installation and repair; trim and woodwork repair and restoration; window and window covering repairs; flooring repairs; installation and repair of tile work and carpeting; drywall installation and repair; maintenance and repair of office furnishings; fabrication and installation of shelving, wall units, cabinets and countertops; installation of display, chalkboards and display cases; set up and tear down of staging and event displays, coordination of work assignments and requisitioning of materials when required.

Additionally, the Carpenter I may perform more detailed work, including:

  • Layout, hanging and maintenance of all types of doors and windows, including servicing and maintaining both standard doors and windows as well as curtain wall systems. Layout, assembly and maintenance of interior partitions; layout, installation and finishing of drywall and other wall finishes; furniture fabrication, maintenance and repair; layout and installation of concrete formwork; fabrication and lamination of specialized counters and work top surfaces; handling, cutting, installing and servicing glass products and associated hardware; fabricating, installing, and servicing specialty products; coordination of work assignments, and elements of design for special projects as required.


  • Must have a minimum of a Grade 10 education or the equivalent
  • Provincial Certificates of Qualification and Certificates of Apprenticeship (or approved equivalent) in Carpentry
  • Five (5) years recent experience as a carpenter experienced in commercial building maintenance, renovation and repair
  • Must have a demonstrated and in depth understanding of all related tools, shop equipment, repair and joinery techniques involved in building envelope, interior and furniture maintenance
  • Must have the ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings, make accurate material takeoffs and estimates, and write summary reports of condition assessment surveys when necessary
  • The Carpenter I does the work of other trades as required to the limit of their skill, training and code requirements
