Overview

The Incumbent’s main priority is to ensure smooth, efficient and quality operation of Velocity programs, which include Velocity Start, Velocity Residence, Velocity Science, Velocity Garage, and the Velocity Fund.

Responsibilities

Operations

  • Provide senior-management hands-on guidance on the day-to-day operations of Velocity as it relates to finances, events, facilities, recruiting and admissions, communications, social media, marketing, and metric tracking and evaluation and reporting.
  • Responsible for the recruiting, coaching, and dismissal of staff
  • Ensure efficient processes are in place and are being used
  • Ensure the Velocity team is in harmony with, and implements, the overall vision of our program
  • Ensure a healthy, supportive team culture
  • Coaching and motivating staff who report to this position as well as the Velocity team in general
  • Create yearly budgets and financial statements for Provost approval. Ongoing oversight and management of the budget and financial statements and approval of new spending

Planning and Strategy

  • Work closely with the Director to set the strategy and overall vision and direction of Velocity
  • Capitalize on opportunities as they arise to strengthen and expand the program
  • Be in tune with evolving trends in order to implement them into the program
  • Finding workable solutions to issues as they arise.
  • Working closely with the Director to develop and execute a fundraising strategy

Outreach

  • Velocity is a leading student incubator in the world, and as such, other educational institutions. regularly reach out for guidance. The incumbent is responsible to speak on behalf of Velocity and the University of Waterloo to national and international educational institutions discussing the Velocity program, providing opinions and observations
  • Effectively and compellingly speaking on behalf of Velocity and the University of Waterloo to organizations such as other national and international universities, community organizations, campus partners, and other stakeholders
  • Actively pursuing and creating opportunities to develop close relationships with venture capitalists, angel investors, government leaders, community leaders, entrepreneurs, etc.

Metrics and Reporting

  • Work closely with the Operations Manager to accurately and completely track metrics for our various programs
  • Be completely knowledgeable of these metrics to be able to speak to them as needed
  • Converting the knowledge to plan and influence future Velocity programs and overall direction
  • Work closely with Institutional Analysis & Planning and student entrepreneurship partners to convey a compelling story of our success.

Qualifications

  • University degree or equivalent education and extensive experience
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in a university setting, tech community and/or start up community
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships, be adaptable and gain consensus in a fast-paced environment
  • Senior management-level experience developing and executing the strategic vision and direction
  • Capable of managing multiple demanding priorities
  • Working knowledge of aspects of marketing and communications, event management, finances, and operations an asset
